The Wastage Summary screen displays the following attributes, the majority of these figures are derived where applicable I have placed a description of how this figure is arrived at:-
For Datasets | Description |
BITS WASTED PER RECORD * | The number of bits wasted in
every individual record. This is made from the bit fillers that occur
between data items and the filler at the end of the record to the next
beginning of the next record. A graphical display of this waste can be
viewed through clicking the Record Format
option.
|
RECORD FILLER PER BLOCK | The number of words wasted in every individual block due to the record size. This is made from the filler at the end of the last record to the end of the block. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER BLOCK * | The total number of words wasted in every individual block. This is made from the bits wasted in each record plus the words wasted in each block due to the record size. |
BLOCKS FILLER PER AREA | The number of words wasted in every individual area due to the block size. This made from the filler at the end of the last block to the end of the area. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER AREA IN WORDS * | The total number of words wasted in every individual area. This is made from the Blocks filler per Area, Record Filler per Block and Bits Wasted per Record. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER AREA IN % * | As above as a percentage of the actual area size. |
POTENTIAL TOTAL UNUSABLE SPACE * | The total number of words wasted if all the Areas were populated. |
DKTABLE WASTAGE | |
DELETED KEY TABLE IN SECTORS | The number of sectors that the DK Table occupies. |
DELETED KEY WASTAGE IN SECTORS | The number of sectors that are not in use as a consequence of Deleted Records. This made from space taken up by the deleted records that the DK Table points at. |
TOTAL DELETED KEYS WASTAGE | The total number of sectors that are not in use for data as a consequence of Deleted Records. This is made from the size of the DK Table and the Deleted records that it points at. |
CURRENT WASTAGE | |
ACTUAL DATA SPACE USED * | The number of sectors of actual data. This is made from the actual amount of space that the data occupies. |
DATA SPACE UNUSED * | The number of sectors of space in the file not used. This is made from the file size minus the actual amount of space that the data occupies. |
ACTUAL DATA LOADFACTOR * | The percentage of the file that is occupied by actual data. |
WASTE PERCENTAGE * | The percentage of the file that is not possible to us for data. This made from the Total Deleted Key Wastage plus the actual unusable space due to fillers. |
* If you do not 'Add Data Items on Load' the Bits Waste Per Record is not calculated and set to 0 bits. Any derived wastage reflects this value and will reduce the indicated amount of waste accordingly.
For Sets | |
BITS WASTED PER KEY ** | The number of bits wasted in
every individual key. This is made from the bit fillers that occur
between key and data items. A graphical display of this waste can be
viewed through clicking the Key Format
option. |
ENTRY FILLER PER TABLE | The number of words wasted in every individual table due to the key entry size. This is made from the filler at the end of the last key entry to the end of the table. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER TABLE ** | The total number of words wasted in every individual table. This is made from the bits wasted in each key plus the words wasted in each table due to the key entry size. |
TABLES FILLER PER AREA | The number of words wasted in every individual area due to the table size. This made from the filler at the end of the last table to the end of the area. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER AREA IN WORDS ** | The total number of words wasted in every individual area. This is made from the Tables filler per Area, Key Filler per Table and Bits Wasted per Key. |
TOTAL WORDS WASTED PER AREA % ** | As above as a percentage of the actual area size. |
POTENTIAL TOTAL UNUSABLE SPACE ** | The total number of words wasted if all the Areas were populated. |
DELETED TABLE WASTAGE | |
DELETED TABLES | The number of Deleted Tables. |
DELETED WASTAGE IN SECTORS | The number of sectors that are not in use as a consequence of Deleted Tables. |
CURRENT WASTAGE | |
ACTUAL DATA SPACE USED ** | The number of sectors of actual data. This is made from the actual amount of space that the data occupies. |
DATA SPACE UNUSED ** | The number of sectors of space in the file not used. This is made from the file size minus the actual amount of space that the data occupies. |
ACTUAL DATA LOADFACTOR ** | The percentage of the file that is occupied by actual data. |
WASTE PERCENTAGE ** | The percentage of the file that is not possible to us for data. This made from the Total Deleted Table Wastage plus the actual unusable space due to fillers. |
** If you do not 'Add
Data Items on Load' the Bits Waste Per Key is not calculated and set
to 0 bits. Any derived wastage reflects this value and will reduce the
indicated amount of waste accordingly.
